Curl Essence American Curl Cats
American Curl Cats

I'm re-doing several of these pages so you may see some duplication until I'm done.
I intend to add pictures of cats in our breeding program on this page and move the show information to 'Recent Awards' page.... it's a work in progress right now.
I hope you don't mind the overlap while I'm working on these pages. -Linda

American Curl Cats in Championship
Champions, Grand Champions, Regional Breed Winners, and National Breed Winners...and we have American Curls in cat competitions in countries all over the world... We show in both CFA and in TICA. We haven't included all our Champions or Grand Champions/Alters below.  It would make this page way too long.  We have included a little about several recent ones.

2016-2017 show year update

We're pretty proud of our final awards for our cats this year.

Storm ended this show season as Best of Breed in Alter class in both TICA and CFA for the SW region,  4th Best of Breed internationally in TICA, and 9th Best Alter of ALL alters shown in TICA (which includes all alters shown of all breeds competing.)

Colette ended the year as Best Kitten in our region and 4th Best American Curl internationally.

Timmy ended the year as 4th in TICA in the SW Region and 5th internationally, plus 2nd Best of Breed in the SW Region in TICA. Timmy earned the required points to earn the title of Grand Champion in CFA at the Jan2018 show in Del Mar

New Grand!....

The CFA awards have now been posted as well.  Storm is 18th
Best Alter in the SW Region.  His competition included some outstanding Abbys, Exotics, Siamese, Persians, Bobtails, and Somalis, just to name a few.  He is also CFA's Best of Breed for the SW Region for American Curls for the 2016-2017 show year.

Congratulations to Storm... a new Grand Premier in CFA and
Supreme Grand Champion in TICA.

Curl Essence Withstanding the Storm ("Storm") earned his Grand title at the CFA show with just 2 shows.  That's huge!  Below is a photo and a video of Mike with the judge who awarded him the final points to qualify for his Grand title in CFA.  He continued to final in 4 more rings after this ring.  Besides being  gorgeous!, Storm has what we call "the suck-up factor".  He LOVES the shows.  He LOVES being handled by the judges.  He LOVES the attention from people visiting the shows.  Basically, he's a ham.  The judges like handling cats that are enjoying the show.

The light in the window behind them sort of washes out the photo and Storm was more interested in all the activity of the other exhibitors getting their cats from the ring.  Below are a couple of photos of another judge evaluating Storm.  The video below is of this judge awarding Storm his final points for his Grand title.
Picture
The photo to the right shows Dennis Ganoe stretching Storm and evaluating his profile.  Curls are longer than tall.  Length is important.  Also important is placement of the rear legs.  The judges will have the cats stand on the table to see how they hold their rear legs.  The rear legs should be straight with feet directly below them... not pointed out which is called 'cowhocked".  It's a serious deficiency in breeding.  A male cat that is seriously cowhocked can have trouble supporting himself when breeding.
This is our living room wall downstairs.  We have piles of ribbons upstairs too.  We can't hang them just anywhere.  If they are within reach of the cats, they become cat toys. Since this photo was taken last year, I have a new pile of ribbons on the right corner.  I just don't where to hang them.  We used to hang them from our walls in the living room, but it started looking too cluttered so we decided to hang them around the fireplace.  The long ribbons with little stickers on them are from TICA.  TICA awards finals differently than CFA.  CFA awards a ribbon for each final.  (Some of the smaller shows just hand out paper ribbons.  The points still count so we don't care.)  TICA hands out a larger ribbon and gives you these little stick-on tabs for each final.  So each little sticker is equal to a ribbon in CFA.

Supreme Grand Champion Curl Essence Sir Kingsley

Picture
To the right is SGC (Supreme Grand Champion) Curl Essence Sir Kingsley.   Kingsley achieved his Supreme Grand Champion title in TICA at the December 14, 2014 TICA Show in Arcadia, California despite having to be pulled earlier in the year with a serious health issue that caused him to spend 8 days in emergency care.  Today he is perfectly healthy and he achieved Supreme Grand Champion in three shows... we are very proud of him.  Kingsley held the position of the Best American Curl in the 2014-2015 show year in TICA with his son Elron in 3rd position most of the show year.  He ended the show year in 2nd position internationally for the breed... bummer! right?  well, he just got tired of showing towards the end of the year and wouldn't show off for the judges in the rings.  It cost him the points he needed to hold on to 1st place.  (I guess he felt it was time to move on to the position of baby-making.)

American Curl
SGC Curl Essence Son-of-Righteousness, "Sonny" (to the right) earned his Supreme Grand Champion Alter title in the 2014-2015 show year in TICA.  This is the highest title he can win in TICA.  He is also Best of Breed in the TICA Southwest Region for the 2014-2015 show year.  Sonny is out of Cinnamon, who was our first Grand Champion thirteenyears ago, and can be seen below. Cinnamon is now a part of the growing American Curl population in Brazil.  The judges love, love, love his long super soft coat!

Sonny found the absolute perfect home with one of our curl friends who also has one of our other cats.  We were so pleased when we saw Dan at a cat show and he said he wanted to take Sonny home with him.  We had seen Dan at several shows where he had helped take Sonny to rings for us so they had already bonded.
We couldn't have asked for a better home for this boy's retirement.  Dan treats his cats even better than we do, if that's at all possible.  I have several updates from Dan I will be posting on our testimonial page.  We love it when our cat familys send us updates on our kitties.

CFA and TICA have different titles available for their cats.

Titles are won by accumulating points at shows for cats your cat beats.  You earn the title of Champion  in CFA after being judged by 6 different judges..  Then you earn the title of Grand Champion by earning a total of 200 points as a Champion.  One point is awarded for each cat  your cat beats in competition.   Alters are called  "Premiers" and  require 75 points to be awarded a title of Grand Premier in CFA.  The reason Premiers don't require as many points to Grand is because there are so few premiers being shown that it's hard to accumulate the points you need for the title.  Grand titles in TICA are awarded for both "Adults" ("Champion" in CFA) and "Alters" ("Premiers" in CFA).  Titles in TICA for either Adult or Alter require the same number of points.   TICA  also has more titles with more points required for each title to encourage people to continue their older cats.   TICA has titles of Grand, Double Grand, Triple Grand, Quadruple Grand and finally Supreme Grand.  To be a Supreme Grand, the cat must earn one ribbon as Best Cat in Show as a Quadruple Grand.  Each title also requires a specific number of "finals", meaning the cat had to be included in a  judge's top cats for his/her class.  You can't just accumulate points and be in the finals for the Supreme title.  The cat has to be awarded the Best Cat in Show in at least one ring after becoming a Quadruple Grand.  Titles in TICA require significantly more points with "finals", i.e., Grand = 1000 points, Double Grand  = 2000 points, Triple Grand = 3000 points, etc. We are exceptionally proud of the Supreme titles for Kingsley and Sonny.
Cat Breeders
Curl Essence Cinnamon was our very first CFA Grand Champion.  "Cinns-a-mon" was a child out of one of our first litters from our first breeding cats.  His mom is CH Procurlharem Juliekurl (see photo below left) and CH Procurlharem Sir Curlsalot ("Erskin") (photo below right).  Granding Cinns was the hook that converted Mike from the football games on weekends to going to cat shows.  Cinns is now in Brazil making pretty little red babies with great ears and the sweet temperament he is known for. Our goal in cat breeding is to produce the perfect  American Curl cat.

Sonny and Cinnamon are carbon copies of each other.  We frequently get other dark red babies that look just like these two boys did as babies.  Our dark red kittens always inherit this same long silky, silky soft coat and dramatic appearance.  They also seem to keep that same mellow, affectionate personality we got with both Cinnamon and Sonny.

American Curls
Above is Juliekurl, our foundation queen from Procurlharem.  She was registered as a silver tabby, but you can see just the slightest bit of color on her chest.  It's really, really faint, but she is actually a silver patched tabby which means she carries the red gene.  She's getting older but we still have Julie.  Since I've been feeding her raw chicken in the mornings, she strong and healthy.
American Curl
Above is Erskin.  Erskin is our foundation sire.  His registered name is Sir KurlsALot.  "Erskin" is a blue tabby.  Erskin and Julie produced our first reds.  Erskin's parents were a colorpoint and red tabby and white.  Obviously, that little bit of red in Julie's bloodline combined with the red from Erskin's dad is what produced the dark reds we still get.

Grand Champion, Regional Breed Winner,3rd Place National Breed Winner 2010-2011 - Curl Essence Sarafina.

Cat Shows
"Sara" (GC, RW, NW Curl Essence Sarafina') is a long hair brown patched tabby.

The standard for the American Curl was based on a female, the first American Curl was named Shulamith.  "Shu's"  story is told on the Breed Origins page under Media & Shows.  It's also on any number of websites documenting the breed.  Sara displays many of these same original characteristics.  Grace Ruga, founder of the breed is the primary reason we kept Sara in our breeding program and showed her.  We had asked Grace to evaluate Sara's entire litter at about 3-1/2 mo. of age.  We hadn't really planned to show her, but Grace saw something in Sara that reminded her of her beloved Shu. Obviously, some of the CFA judges saw it too because she came in 3th in the Nation (which includes international) for the 2010-2011 show year.
